about
Niki Medlik is a designer and artist. She is the face of studio medlikova, based at the top of an independent bookshop which is home to the publishing imprint, Propolis books. She designs and publishes from here, and works as a fine artist from her home studio. She is never short of ideas and creative solutions.
She has worked in publishing for the majority of her career, beginning at Frances Lincoln Publishers, then moving to Thames and Hudson where she worked for 17 years as a book designer, followed by specialising in cover design, art directing and managing their team of inhouse and freelance cover designers.
Niki began her lifelong love of printmaking at age 17 when she specialised in etching for A level art. This thread continued, running alongside her career as a designer. She did an MA in Fine Art at the eco printmaking department at Wimbledon Art School (but surprised herself by specialising in sound art for her final show).
Today she has a successful design business alongside her creative practice (printmaking, painting, and sound), and in recent years has been most fulfilled when the two are combined - eg creating 'New Cemetery'; a book of her prints with Simon Armitage's poems, and often using her artwork for book covers. She exhibits as an artist and designs for other artists, including catalogue and exhibition design.
